For many international students, receiving Optional Practical Training (OPT) approval is an exciting milestone. After years of studying in the United States, you finally have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience related to your degree. However, the first 30 days after your OPT start date are among the most important in your career journey. Successful F-1 students don’t wait for opportunities—they prepare, network, and act immediately. These early actions often determine how quickly they secure employment and build a successful career in the United States. In this guide, we’ll explore what top-performing F-1 students do during their first 30 days of OPT and how you can follow the same path. Why the First 30 Days Matter The initial month of OPT is critical because employers are actively hiring candidates who are prepared, organized, and ready to contribute. Every day counts, especially considering that unemployment during standard post-completion OPT is limited by U.S. immigration regulations. Starting early gives you a competitive advantage over candidates who delay their job search. Week 1: Build a Strong Foundation 1. Update Your Resume Your resume should be tailored to U.S. hiring standards. Include: Professional summary Technical skills Relevant projects Internship experience Certifications Quantifiable achievements Keep it concise—one page is ideal for recent graduates. 2. Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile Recruiters frequently search LinkedIn for candidates before reviewing applications. Make sure your profile includes: Professional headshot Clear headline Updated work experience Skills and endorsements Open to Work status Professional About section A complete LinkedIn profile significantly increases recruiter visibility. 3. Create a Job Search Strategy Don’t apply randomly. Instead: Define your target roles List preferred locations Research companies Prepare customized resumes for different positions Having a structured plan saves time and improves application quality. Week 2: Apply Smart, Not Just More Target Quality Applications Instead of sending hundreds of generic applications, customize each one. Many companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), so including relevant keywords improves your chances of passing the initial screening. Build Your Portfolio For IT and engineering students: Include: GitHub projects Personal website Case studies Certifications Project documentation A strong portfolio often differentiates candidates with similar academic backgrounds. Start Networking Many jobs are filled through referrals rather than public job boards. Connect with: Alumni Professors Former classmates Recruiters Industry professionals Attend virtual career fairs and networking events whenever possible. Week 3: Prepare for Interviews Practice Technical Interviews Depending on your field, prepare for: Coding assessments Case studies Technical questions Practical demonstrations Practice consistently using mock interviews. Master Behavioral Questions Employers also evaluate communication and teamwork. Prepare examples for questions like: Tell me about yourself. Describe a challenge you faced. Explain a successful project. Why should we hire you? Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answers. Improve Communication Skills Clear communication is one of the most valued skills by U.S. employers. Practice: Speaking confidently Explaining technical concepts simply Professional email writing Video interview etiquette Week 4: Expand Your Opportunities Apply Through Multiple Channels Don’t rely on a single platform. Explore: Company career pages LinkedIn Jobs University career portals Recruitment agencies Professional networking groups Diversifying your search increases your chances of receiving interviews. Follow Up Professionally After interviews or networking conversations, send a thank-you email within 24 hours. A simple follow-up demonstrates professionalism and genuine interest. Continue Learning Use your free time to earn certifications and improve your skills. Popular areas include: Cloud Computing Artificial Intelligence Data Analytics Cybersecurity Project Management Digital Marketing Continuous learning makes your profile more attractive to employers. Common Mistakes to Avoid Many students delay their job search because they believe opportunities will come automatically. Avoid these common mistakes: Waiting too long before applying Using the same resume for every job Ignoring networking opportunities Neglecting interview preparation Failing to update LinkedIn Applying without researching the company Giving up after a few rejections Remember, job searching is a process that requires consistency and persistence. Daily Success Checklist During your first month of OPT, aim to: Apply to 10–20 relevant jobs each day Connect with 5–10 professionals on LinkedIn Practice interview questions for 30–60 minutes Learn a new technical skill every week Update your job application tracker Review feedback and improve your resume regularly Small daily actions create long-term career success. Final Thoughts The first 30 days of OPT can shape the direction of your professional career in the United States. Students who prepare early, network consistently, and apply strategically often receive interview opportunities much faster than those who wait. Success during OPT isn’t about luck—it’s about taking the right actions every day. Build a professional resume, strengthen your LinkedIn profile, improve your interview skills, and stay consistent with your applications. Every application, connection, and interview brings you one step closer to your dream job in the USA.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the technology industry at an unprecedented pace. From writing code and analyzing data to automating customer support and testing software, AI tools are changing how businesses operate. As a result, many international students wonder, “Will AI replace entry-level tech jobs?” The short answer is no—but it is changing them. While AI is automating repetitive tasks, it is also creating new opportunities for professionals who know how to work alongside AI. For F-1 students and recent graduates, the key to success is developing skills that complement AI rather than compete with it. In this article, we’ll explore how AI is impacting entry-level technology jobs, which roles are evolving, and how international students can prepare for the future job market. Is AI Replacing Entry-Level Tech Jobs? AI is not eliminating all entry-level positions. Instead, it is automating routine and repetitive work while increasing demand for professionals who can solve complex problems, collaborate effectively, and use AI tools productively. Tasks that once required hours of manual effort—such as writing basic code, creating reports, or generating documentation—can now be completed in minutes with AI assistance. However, businesses still need skilled professionals to validate results, build systems, understand customer requirements, and make strategic decisions. Think of AI as a productivity tool rather than a complete replacement for software engineers or IT professionals. How AI Is Changing the Tech Industry AI is reshaping nearly every area of technology. Software Development AI coding assistants can: Generate sample code Detect bugs Suggest improvements Write documentation Create unit tests Developers who understand software architecture and problem-solving remain highly valuable because AI cannot fully replace critical thinking or business understanding. Data Analytics AI helps analysts: Clean data Generate visualizations Create reports Identify trends Human analysts are still needed to interpret results, communicate insights, and make data-driven business recommendations. Quality Assurance (QA) Testing tools powered by AI can automate repetitive testing, but QA engineers continue to design test strategies, validate user experiences, and ensure software quality. Cybersecurity AI can detect unusual activity and monitor threats, but cybersecurity professionals investigate incidents, develop security policies, and respond to sophisticated attacks. Tech Skills That AI Cannot Easily Replace Employers increasingly value skills that combine technical expertise with human judgment. Focus on developing: Problem-solving abilities Critical thinking System design Software architecture Cloud computing Cybersecurity Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Data engineering DevOps API development Database design Communication skills Leadership and teamwork These skills require creativity, collaboration, and decision-making—areas where humans continue to outperform AI.

For thousands of international students in the United States, STEM Optional Practical Training (STEM OPT) is more than just a visa extension—it’s an opportunity to gain valuable work experience, build a professional network, and take the next step toward a successful career. However, every year many STEM OPT applications are delayed, denied, or rejected because of avoidable mistakes. Even a small error in your application, employer information, or supporting documents can affect your employment authorization and future career plans. The good news is that most STEM OPT rejections can be prevented with careful preparation. In this guide, we’ll discuss the most common reasons STEM OPT applications face problems and how you can avoid them. What Is STEM OPT? STEM OPT is a 24-month extension available to eligible F-1 students who have completed a degree in a qualifying Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) field and meet the program requirements. The extension allows graduates to continue gaining practical work experience in the United States while maintaining their F-1 status. Why STEM OPT Applications Get Rejected Many students assume that simply having a STEM degree guarantees approval. In reality, USCIS carefully reviews every application for eligibility, accuracy, and compliance. Most rejections happen because applicants overlook important requirements or submit incomplete information. Mistake #1: Applying Too Late One of the biggest reasons students lose STEM OPT eligibility is waiting until the last minute. Your application must be filed within the required filing window. Missing the deadline could result in losing your opportunity for the STEM OPT extension. How to Avoid It Know your application timeline. Start preparing documents early. Meet regularly with your Designated School Official (DSO). Don’t wait until your current OPT is about to expire. Planning ahead gives you time to correct mistakes before submission. Mistake #2: Working for an Ineligible Employer Not every employer qualifies for STEM OPT employment. Your employer must meet specific program requirements, including participation in E-Verify, and must be able to complete the required training documentation. Accepting employment with an ineligible company can create serious problems for your application. Tip Before accepting an offer, confirm that the employer meets STEM OPT requirements. Mistake #3: Errors on Form I-983 Form I-983 is one of the most important parts of the STEM OPT application. Common mistakes include: Missing signatures Incomplete training plans Incorrect employer information Vague learning objectives Missing supervisor details USCIS expects the training plan to clearly explain how your employment relates to your degree and professional development. Take time to review every section carefully. Mistake #4: Submitting Incorrect Documents Many applications are delayed because students upload incomplete or incorrect documents. Typical issues include: Expired passport Incorrect I-20 Missing signatures Unclear document scans Wrong filing fee Missing employment authorization documents Create a checklist before submitting your application. Mistake #5: Job Doesn’t Match Your Degree STEM OPT employment must directly relate to your qualifying STEM degree. For example: A student with a Computer Science degree should generally work in software development, cybersecurity, data science, cloud computing, or similar technical roles. Working in unrelated positions may raise concerns during review. Mistake #6: Poor Communication With Your DSO Your Designated School Official (DSO) plays a critical role in your STEM OPT application. Many students delay communication until the final days before filing. Instead: Schedule meetings early. Respond quickly to requests. Review your updated Form I-20 carefully. Ask questions if you’re unsure about any requirement. Strong communication helps prevent avoidable errors. Mistake #7: Ignoring Reporting Requirements Receiving STEM OPT approval is only the beginning. Students must continue meeting reporting obligations throughout the extension period. These may include: Reporting address changes Employment updates Validation reports Employer changes Annual evaluations Missing required reporting deadlines can affect your F-1 status. Mistake #8: Depending Only on One Job Offer Many students stop applying after receiving a verbal offer. Unfortunately, job offers can change due to hiring freezes, budget cuts, or business decisions. Continue networking and applying until your employment is officially confirmed. Keeping multiple opportunities open reduces career risk. Mistake #9: Not Keeping Personal Records Maintain organized copies of all important documents, including: Passport Visa I-20 forms Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) Job offer letters Pay stubs Form I-983 Employer evaluations Employment verification letters Having complete records can make future applications and compliance much easier. Mistake #10: Assuming Everyone’s Situation Is the Same Advice from friends or online forums may not apply to your specific case. Each student’s: Degree Employer Immigration history Employment situation School policies may differ. Always verify information through your university’s international student office or qualified immigration professionals when necessary. Best Practices for a Successful STEM OPT Application Increase your chances of approval by following these best practices: Start preparing several months in advance. Verify your employer’s eligibility. Review every document carefully before submission. Keep copies of all application materials. Stay in regular contact with your DSO. Submit accurate and complete information. Monitor your application status. Keep track of reporting deadlines after approval. Preparation is the best way to avoid unnecessary delays or complications. Life After STEM OPT Approval Receiving STEM OPT approval is an important milestone, but it’s also a time to focus on long-term career growth. Use the extension period to: Gain hands-on experience. Develop advanced technical skills. Earn industry certifications. Build professional relationships. Strengthen your resume. Explore future sponsorship opportunities. The experience you gain during STEM OPT can significantly improve your career prospects in the U.S. technology industry. Final Thoughts A STEM OPT rejection can delay your career plans, but many of the underlying causes are preventable. Careful preparation, attention to detail, and timely communication with your employer and university can help you avoid common mistakes. Treat your STEM OPT application as a professional project. Review every document thoroughly, understand the requirements, and stay organized throughout the process. By taking these steps, you’ll be in a much stronger position to protect your work authorization and continue building a successful career in the United States.

One of the most common questions international students ask after receiving Optional Practical Training (OPT) authorization is: “Can I work multiple jobs while on OPT?” The answer is yes—in many cases, you can. However, there are important rules that every F-1 student must follow to remain in compliance with U.S. immigration regulations. Working multiple jobs can help you gain diverse experience, increase your income, and expand your professional network, but only if each job meets OPT requirements. In this guide, we’ll explain when multiple jobs are allowed, what rules apply, and how to stay compliant while making the most of your OPT. What Is OPT? Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows eligible F-1 students to work in the United States in a position that is directly related to their major field of study. There are two main types of OPT: Pre-Completion OPT – Used while you’re still enrolled in school. Post-Completion OPT – Used after completing your degree and is the most common option for graduates. Most students asking about multiple jobs are referring to Post-Completion OPT. Can You Work Multiple Jobs on OPT? Yes. U.S. immigration regulations generally allow F-1 students on post-completion OPT to work for more than one employer at the same time. For example, you could: Work full-time as a Software Developer for one company. Work part-time as a Web Developer for another employer. Accept freelance projects that qualify as OPT employment. Work for a startup while also working for an established company. Combine contract work with regular employment if it complies with OPT requirements. The key requirement is that every job must be directly related to your degree program. Requirements for Working Multiple Jobs To remain compliant while holding multiple positions, you should ensure that: 1. Every Job Relates to Your Degree Your work should clearly connect to the field you studied. For example: Computer Science Graduate Software Engineer Data Analyst Cloud Engineer Cybersecurity Analyst AI Developer Business Graduate Financial Analyst Marketing Specialist Business Consultant Operations Analyst If a job has no clear relationship to your degree, it may not qualify as valid OPT employment. 2. Maintain Required Work Hours For post-completion OPT, employment generally should total at least 20 hours per week to qualify as active employment. If you have two part-time jobs of 10 hours each, they can often satisfy this requirement together because they total 20 hours per week. 3. Report Employment Properly Whenever you begin or end employment, report the required information through your school’s international student office or the designated reporting system. Keep your employment records current to help maintain your F-1 status.
